Chinese National Extradited to US Over $36.9 Million Cryptocurrency Investment Scam

California: A Chinese national accused of laundering funds linked to a $36.9 million cryptocurrency investment scam targeting Americans has been extradited from the Netherlands to the United States, where he appeared before a federal court in California on October 23.

Zheng Zhao, 44, was arraigned in the US District Court for the Central District of California on a charge of conspiracy to commit money laundering. The case concerns an alleged international criminal operation that defrauded American victims through fraudulent cryptocurrency investment schemes, according to the US Department of Justice (DOJ).

Federal authorities allege that Zhao was involved in a criminal network operating through scam centres in Cambodia. These operations reportedly targeted individuals in the United States, persuading them to invest money in fraudulent cryptocurrency opportunities.

Investigators identified 174 US victims allegedly connected to the scheme. According to court documents, the perpetrators used multiple channels to approach potential victims, including social media platforms, telephone calls, text messages and online dating services.

The alleged scammers reportedly established contact and built relationships with their targets before drawing them into the fraudulent investment arrangements. The case highlights how cryptocurrency-related fraud operations can exploit online interactions to deceive individuals and move illicitly obtained funds across borders.

Zhao’s extradition from the Netherlands marks a significant development in the cross-border investigation. His appearance in California initiates the US judicial proceedings against him on the money-laundering conspiracy charge.

The allegations remain subject to court proceedings, and Zhao is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

The US Department of Justice’s Criminal Division is prosecuting the case as authorities pursue alleged participants in international financial fraud networks targeting American investors.
