New Delhi: The Congress Working Committee (CWC) has demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and suspension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging serious irregularities in the exercise. The demands were adopted at a CWC meeting in New Delhi.
Key Demands
According to the CWC resolution, the Congress has sought:
- Immediate resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
- Suspension of the SIR process.
- Restoration of the 13.3 crore voter names that the party alleges were removed.
- Publication of data on changes made to electoral rolls and an appeal mechanism for affected voters.
- An independent, time-bound probe into serious discrepancies and greater transparency in the election process.
The resolution also referred to reported objections raised by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi over several SIR-related decisions, including changes to Form 6 and voter-roll management.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge additionally called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resignation on moral grounds over what he alleged was pressure on the Election Commission. These are Congress’s political claims and have not been established as facts.
The Election Commission has said SIR decisions were approved unanimously by the full commission, and that differences during deliberations are part of institutional decision-making.
