Delhi Police has taken down around 300 social media posts allegedly spreading rumours, misinformation and content capable of disturbing public order amid continuing protests in the national capital, police sources said, according to reports.
The crackdown follows demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of “vote chori” and claims of police misconduct during protests.
Police are scanning online platforms for fabricated videos, misleading claims and content that could trigger unrest. Authorities have also approached X seeking the removal of objectionable and allegedly misleading posts linked to the demonstrations.
The action comes days after the arrest of 24-year-old Nadeem Ahmed, accused of using artificial intelligence tools to create and circulate a fabricated video depicting a police officer sexually harassing a woman journalist during an anti-CEC protest.
Police said the video falsely portrayed a police personnel in an objectionable manner. The case is being investigated separately from sexual harassment allegations made against police personnel by women journalists.
Meanwhile, protests organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar led to several detentions, with police citing the absence of permission.
CJP’s Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained after allegedly jumping a gate to enter the protest site.
The demonstrations prompted extensive security arrangements, restrictions around sensitive locations and disruptions to metro services.
Groups of men also allegedly threatened and assaulted protesters and journalists in Connaught Place and near the MCD Civic Centre.
Separately, an Opposition march to the Supreme Court over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise led to an FIR.
Security deployment in Delhi, including 20,000 paramilitary personnel, has been extended by four weeks, according to Ministry of Home Affairs sources.
