Fraud and Scam

Fake Trading Apps, Investment Scams: What Should Investors Do After Losing Money?

New Delhi: Fraudsters are increasingly targeting India’s growing investor base through fake trading applications and WhatsApp groups promising quick profits and guaranteed returns. Investors who fall victim to such schemes should report the fraud immediately, as swift action may improve the chances of recovering their money.

Scammers often use fabricated profit screenshots, stock tips and fake market experts to gain credibility. Victims are subsequently encouraged to download fraudulent applications and transfer money, sometimes losing substantial savings.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has warned investors about unregistered operators running invitation-only WhatsApp groups under the pretext of providing free investment education. According to the regulator, overseas numbers and coordinated posts praising supposed experts are used to create a false impression of credibility, a tactic known as astroturfing.

What should victims do immediately?

Anyone who loses money in an online investment scam should contact their bank or payment service provider without delay and call the national cybercrime helpline at 1930. A complaint should also be filed through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Prompt reporting may help authorities trace or block funds before they are transferred further, although recovery is not guaranteed.

Investors should also preserve transaction records, payment confirmations, screenshots, chat histories and details of the fraudulent application to support their complaint.

How can investors avoid these scams?

SEBI advises investors to remain cautious of unregistered advisers and misleading investment recommendations. Guaranteed-return promises, claims of doubling money quickly and unsolicited stock tips should be treated as warning signs.

Before investing, users should verify an adviser’s SEBI registration and check whether an application is listed among authorised intermediary apps through the regulator’s official resources. Investors should avoid clicking unverified links shared in messaging groups.

While reporting a fraud quickly may improve the prospects of recovery, prevention and verification remain essential safeguards against online investment scams.
