Floods, Landslides Kill at Least 70 in India and Nepal Amid Heavy Rain

Heavy rain and storms have triggered floods and landslides across India and Nepal, killing at least 56 people in India and 14 in Nepal, while 11 others remain missing in Nepal.

Authorities in both countries have warned of further flooding as river levels continue to rise.

India: 56 Dead, Rivers Above Danger Mark
Uttar Pradesh recorded 66.5 mm of rain between September 25 and the morning of September 27, compared with a normal 7.6 mm.

Rescue teams are working in waterlogged areas, while officials have been asked to assess crop losses and provide compensation. Besides the 56 deaths, 46 people were injured and more than 1,000 houses damaged.

The Central Water Commission reported a severe situation at 30 monitoring stations across seven states. The Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Bagmati and Narmada were among rivers flowing above danger levels.

Nepal Faces Flash-Flood Threat
Nepal has warned of possible flash floods in 49 of 77 districts, with rising water levels in major rivers and tributaries. Power supplies have been disrupted in Manang, Mustang, Myagdi and Baglung, while flooding damaged infrastructure at a 40-MW hydropower project.

Floods and landslides also disrupted telecommunications after damage to optical fibres and power lines.

Separately, 10 local workers are missing after an avalanche buried the Himlung Himal base camp in Manang. The workers had been preparing tents for foreign climbers, who were not at the site when the avalanche struck.
