Amid the ongoing controversy at IIT Bombay, former IIT Delhi Director V Ramgopal Rao has called for a more flexible undergraduate structure at IITs, arguing that students enter classrooms with widely different academic backgrounds and learning needs.
In a post on X, Rao said several challenges at IITs stem from a “one-size-fits-all” approach.
I am disturbed to see Prof. Suryanarayana Doola being vilified over the recent controversy at IIT Bombay. I know Surya personally. He is one of the finest faculty members I have known in the IIT system, and a gentleman of the highest integrity. Whatever concerns have been raised… pic.twitter.com/PwlAWQWvW9

He noted that students entering the same classroom can have JEE Advanced ranks ranging from single digits to five digits, while language differences can add to the variation.
Rao questioned whether students with such different preparation can reasonably be expected to learn at the same pace.
He said moving too quickly may leave some students behind, while teaching more slowly could cause others to lose interest.
He also said coaching-based preparation does not always prepare students for unfamiliar problems or independent learning.
As a possible solution, Rao proposed making BTech programmes five years in structure, while allowing students who complete the required credits to graduate in four years, four-and-a-half years or five years.
He suggested additional support through recorded lectures, online learning material, academic assistance and language support.
Rao said the pace should be determined by performance within the IIT rather than admission category or entrance rank.
He also said students needing more time should not feel singled out, while academic standards must remain intact.
Rao further called for fair examination of concerns surrounding IIT Bombay professor Suryanarayana Doolla, saying public vilification serves no purpose.
