The bus, carrying around 30-35 passengers, was travelling from Delhi/Noida towards Mahoba when the fire broke out.
Passengers said they were asleep when smoke and flames spread through the vehicle. Several managed to escape by jumping through windows amid panic and heavy smoke.
According to the FIR filed on passenger Sunil Kumar’s complaint, passengers noticed a burning smell near the driver’s cabin around 11:30 pm, close to kilometre 33.
The complaint alleges that the driver dismissed their concerns and did not immediately stop the bus. It also alleges that the driver and conductor continued smoking cigarettes or bidis in the cabin before flames erupted near the driver’s seat.
Passengers then reportedly pleaded with the driver to stop as smoke filled the bus. The allegations are part of the ongoing investigation.
Survivors recalled struggling to breathe and finding little space to escape. One passenger said only a few people managed to get out, while another said she left without shoes or belongings.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control.
The exact cause remains under investigation, though preliminary reports have suggested a possible short circuit. The bus was also reportedly carrying a large quantity of luggage, including bags on the roof.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences and directed officials to ensure treatment and assistance for the injured and victims’ families.
