Trump And Xi Jinping Hold High-Stakes White House Meeting

Washington, D.C: Chinese President Xi Jinping’s official state visit to the United States is underway, with President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcoming Xi and Madame Peng at the White House.

The two couples greeted each other at the White House before posing for photographs, marking the beginning of a closely watched visit between the leaders of the world’s two largest economies.

Speaking about his relationship with Xi, Trump said, “Since the time of my first election in 2016, President Xi and I have forged a friendship, a truly great friendship, built on mutual respect and the vital interests of our people.”

Trump recalled their meetings in several countries and said they have also spent time together in Beijing and Palm Beach, Florida. However, he noted that this is their first meeting at the White House.

Trump also highlighted the historic nature of Xi’s visit, saying he is the first Chinese leader to make a second formal state visit to the United States.

Trump said the two countries had made significant progress on bilateral issues through their engagement and expressed confidence that the ongoing discussions could deliver long-term gains. He added the talks would cover trade, security, technology and “Super Intelligence (SI),” while highlighting efforts to promote a more balanced trading relationship and expand market access for American farmers and ranchers.

He said decisions taken in these areas could “promote peace and prosperity for decades and decades to come” and added that focusing on common interests could help the two sides achieve further progress.

The visit is set to continue on Friday, when Trump and Xi are expected to visit the National Archives to view the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has invited 100,000 young Americans to visit China for educational exchanges and study over the next five years. Xi said the initiative could help strengthen friendship between the two peoples and described the goals of China’s rejuvenation and America’s development as capable of moving forward together. The proposal would represent a major increase from current levels, with fewer than 2,000 American students currently studying in China, compared with more than 250,000 Chinese students in the United States.
