Hyderabad Woman Duped Of Rs 2.20 Crore By Fake CBI Officers In Digital Arrest Scam

HYDERABAD: A 72-year-old woman from Nampally allegedly lost ₹2.20 crore after cybercriminals posing as a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer threatened her with arrest over fabricated criminal allegations.

According to Additional Commissioner of Police (Crimes) M Srinivasulu, the fraudsters contacted the woman through a video call, claiming that a parcel containing illegal drugs had been booked in her name and that a bank account linked to her was involved in money laundering. They displayed a fake arrest warrant and pressured her into transferring money to multiple bank accounts under the pretext of security deposits to avoid legal action.

Hyderabad Police warned that scammers frequently impersonate law enforcement and government officials to intimidate victims into transferring money. Authorities urged people not to comply with demands for money made under the guise of bail, verification or security deposits.

Victims of cyber fraud can call the national cybercrime helpline 1930 or report the incident at cybercrime.gov.in.
