India and China are set to hold their first Corps Commander-level talks at Wacha along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday, September 6, amid reported friction in the Taksing area of Upper Subansiri district.
Lieutenant General Girish Kalia, who heads the Indian Army’s III Corps, is expected to meet his Chinese counterpart along with other officers.
The Spear Corps, headquartered at Rangapahar near Dimapur in Nagaland, is responsible for operations across Nagaland, Manipur and the central and eastern stretches of Arunachal Pradesh along the LAC.
The talks come after reports of tensions in the Taksing sector. Local commanders from India and China have held several meetings in recent weeks in an effort to resolve the issues and maintain stability along the disputed border.
The military-level engagement follows the August 25 meeting in Beijing between National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who serve as the special representatives for the India-China boundary question.
Earlier this week, Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth visited the Spear Corps to review the operational readiness of formations and ongoing border development initiatives. He was briefed on capability development and measures to strengthen combat preparedness.
The latest Corps Commander-level dialogue is expected to provide another channel for addressing localised friction and maintaining peace along the LAC.
