Jaipur Resident Loses Rs 2 Lakh In Overseas Job Scam, One Arrested

JAIPUR: Rajasthan Police has arrested a man in Gurugram for his alleged role in a cyber fraud that cost a Jaipur resident ₹22 lakh after criminals promised to arrange an overseas job for his son, officials said on Friday.

The accused, Wasim Hussain, a resident of Bareilly, was apprehended by the Central Cyber Police Station in Jaipur. Investigators said he allegedly helped the fraud network by providing bank accounts used to receive and move part of the stolen money.

According to Additional Director General of Police (Cyber Crime) Vijay Kumar Singh, the case dates back to May 3, 2024, when a woman operating a Facebook profile under the name “Dion Marley” contacted the complainant. She allegedly claimed to be an American citizen employed as an accountant at a pharmaceutical company in England and offered to help secure a job abroad for his son.

The victim was subsequently asked to transfer money towards purported airport, customs, income tax and money-laundering clearance charges. Police said the payments, made to multiple bank accounts, eventually totalled ₹22 lakh.

The fraudsters allegedly posed as customs and other government officials, sent forged payment receipts through WhatsApp and threatened the complainant when he resisted further demands.

During the investigation, police allegedly traced three bank accounts provided by Hussain that had received approximately ₹4.12 lakh of the defrauded amount. He is accused of transferring the money to other accounts or withdrawing it through ATMs before passing it to other members of the network.

Police further alleged that Hussain opened the accounts at the request of his cousins, Murshad Hussain and Arshad Hussain, in exchange for a promised commission of ₹70,000. He allegedly handed over the associated ATM cards, passbooks, cheque books and SIM cards.

Officials said the gang primarily targeted elderly people living alone through social media platforms. Further investigation is underway to trace the remaining money and identify other suspects.
