Washington, D.C.: US Vice President JD Vance has given an unusual and serious assessment of Netflix’s romantic comedy Emily in Paris, calling it a “masterwork of American television” and even “the Shakespeare of our time.”
In a video shared on social media on September 14, Vance discussed the show’s complicated love triangle involving Emily Cooper, played by Lily Collins, and French chef Gabriel, portrayed by Lucas Bravo.
Vance said the two characters are clearly meant to be together and argued that Emily should marry Gabriel, start a family with him and build a life together, either in Paris or America.
He also questioned Gabriel’s repeated involvement with other people, saying the characters’ failure to make the right choices creates some of the show’s most absurd and entertaining moments.
According to Vance, the series goes beyond fashion, romance and Parisian adventures, describing it as a “massive cultural criticism of millennial decision-making.”
He said their repeated “atrocious decisions” offer what he sees as cultural commentary on millennials.
Towards the end of the video, Vance urged people to watch the series, saying, “You gotta watch Emily in Paris. It is, at the risk of overstating it, the Shakespeare of our time.”
