A job seeker in Raipur allegedly lost ₹2.72 lakh after falling victim to an online recruitment scam in which a fraudster posing as a recruiter asked him to pay a nominal fee to generate an interview identification number.
The case was registered by Purani Basti police after the complainant, a resident of Professor Colony, approached the authorities on October 14, reporting unauthorised transactions from his two credit cards.
According to the complaint, the man had uploaded his résumé after receiving a job-related link via email. On October 10, around 10 am, he received a call from an unidentified person who appeared to be familiar with the details mentioned in his CV.
The caller subsequently sent him a registration link through a messaging application and instructed him to enter his mobile number and pay ₹10 to obtain an interview ID. The job seeker entered his credit card details on the linked platform.
However, he told police that no one-time password (OTP) arrived immediately and that he had not shared any OTP with the caller. Around five minutes after the conversation ended, he began receiving OTP alerts on his mobile phone and email, while four transactions were carried out using his cards.
One credit card was charged ₹98,900. Three additional transactions of ₹98,900, ₹27,900 and ₹46,900 were recorded on the second card. The combined amount withdrawn through the four transactions was ₹2,72,600.
The complainant subsequently contacted the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 and approached the banks concerned before filing a written complaint at Purani Basti police station.
The incident highlights the risks associated with fraudulent recruitment links that seek payment card information under the pretext of job registration or interview processing. Job seekers should verify vacancies through official company websites and avoid entering financial details on unverified recruitment platforms.
