Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday accused the government of acting out of fear, citing the closure of metro stations and cancellation of train services, as INDIA bloc leaders prepared to meet President Droupadi Murmu over alleged irregularities in the electoral process.
Speaking to reporters, Kharge said the opposition delegation would present its concerns regarding the functioning of the Election Commission and alleged irregularities under Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
“They are afraid. A person who is afraid will die tomorrow, if not today,” Kharge said, responding to questions about the restrictions and transport disruptions in the national capital.
Kharge alleged that decisions taken by Gyanesh Kumar had created an atmosphere of fear and raised concerns about democratic processes. He said the opposition leaders intended to apprise the President of their concerns during the meeting.
“The mistakes committed by Gyanesh Kumar have created a situation of fear in the country and put democracy in danger. That is why we are going to meet the President and apprise her of the things he has done,” he said.
The Congress chief further claimed that other Election Commissioners had raised concerns over the alleged lapses and written letters on the matter multiple times, but no corrective measures had followed.
Referring to Rahul Gandhi’s allegations of “vote chori” and irregularities involving Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), Kharge said the opposition had been raising questions about the electoral process for a long time and maintained that its efforts were aimed at the country’s welfare.
Meanwhile, MPs belonging to the INDIA bloc assembled in the Central Hall of Parliament ahead of their scheduled meeting with President Murmu at 8 pm.
