Marco Rubio Visits Reliance’s Jamnagar Refinery, US LPG Share Rises To 67%

Jamnagar: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Reliance Industries’ Jamnagar facilities in Gujarat on Wednesday, home to the world’s largest single-site refinery.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor expressed his privilege at accompanying Rubio to the facilities. In a post on X, Gor said India’s imports of American liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) had increased from below 10% to 67% over the preceding year, making the United States India’s largest LPG supplier.

“Honored to join SecRubio at RILUpdates Jamnagar facilities. Over the past year, India’s imports of U.S. LPG have surged from under 10% to 67%, making the United States India’s largest LPG supplier,” Gor stated.

He also highlighted Reliance’s planned investment in constructing a new oil refinery in the United States, describing it as a major opportunity to expand American energy production and create jobs.

“Reliance’s planned investment in the first new U.S. oil refinery in 50 years is another major opportunity to expand American energy production and create jobs,” he added.

The visit comes amid efforts by Washington and New Delhi to deepen bilateral energy cooperation while advancing negotiations on a comprehensive bilateral trade agreement. Energy commerce has emerged as a vital pillar of the broader economic partnership between the two countries.

Rubio arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday and held talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on the India-US strategic partnership and progress in negotiations on the proposed trade deal.

He also paid floral tributes to the victims of the November 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, which claimed the lives of six American nationals.

Rubio’s scheduled visit to Gujarat follows his engagements in Mumbai and comes amid broader discussions on energy trade, including India’s imports of Russian petroleum and the possibility of increasing purchases of American energy resources.

The visit also highlights Reliance Industries’ Jamnagar facilities and the company’s proposed investment in establishing a new petroleum processing plant in the United States, which Gor said would boost domestic energy production and generate employment.
