Meet Peng Liyuan, China’s First Lady Drawing Attention During Xi Jinping’s US Visit

Washington, DC: Chinese President Xi Jinping is in Washington for a three-day state visit to the United States, his first state visit to the country in more than a decade. He is accompanied by his wife, Chinese first lady Peng Liyuan.

While Xi’s high-stakes talks with U.S. President Donald Trump are expected to focus on trade, technology, artificial intelligence and broader bilateral ties, Peng is also drawing attention through her own programme of cultural diplomacy.

Xi and Peng arrived at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Wednesday, where they were personally greeted by Trump and first lady Melania Trump.

On Thursday, Peng is scheduled to visit the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art with Melania Trump. The two first ladies are also set to attend the White House state dinner later in the day. On Friday, the two couples are scheduled to have tea at the White House before visiting the National Archives.

But who is Peng Liyuan beyond her diplomatic appearances?

Interesting Facts About China’s First Lady

Born in 1962 in Yuncheng County in China’s Shandong province, Peng grew up in a family with artistic roots. Her mother was an opera performer, and Peng developed an early interest in singing.

At the age of 14, Peng began studying at an arts school in Shandong, where she specialised in folk vocal music. The institution was later renamed Shandong University of Arts.

In 1980, Peng joined the People’s Liberation Army as a performer in its cultural and arts ranks. Her powerful voice and performances of patriotic and folk songs soon made her a household name in China.

She went on to become one of China’s best-known folk singers and was among the country’s early performers to earn a master’s degree in national vocal music. She has also performed internationally, representing China at numerous cultural events.

From National Star To China’s First Lady

Peng met Xi Jinping in 1986, when he was a deputy mayor of Xiamen in Fujian province. The couple married in 1987 and have one daughter, Xi Mingze.

Peng was already a nationally recognised singer before Xi rose to the top of China’s political leadership. Her celebrity status often placed her in the public spotlight independently of her husband.

Beyond music, Peng has taken on several international public-service roles. She has served as a World Health Organization goodwill ambassador for tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS and as a UNESCO Special Envoy for the Advancement of Girls’ and Women’s Education.

Since Xi became Communist Party general secretary in 2012 and president in 2013, Peng has frequently accompanied him on overseas visits, using her public profile and cultural engagements as part of China’s diplomatic outreach.

Known for her polished public appearances and interest in fashion, Peng has emerged as a prominent figure alongside Xi on the international stage, particularly during state visits and cultural events.
