Mumbai: Mumbai’s iconic Cafe Mondegar is among four food establishments whose licences have been suspended by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after inspections found serious food safety and hygiene violations.
The action was announced on Tuesday as part of intensified checks across Mumbai ahead of the festive season, led by FDA commissioner Tukaram Mundhe.
The other establishments are Maharashtra Biryani Centre in Kandivali, Tribhuvan Dairy Farm in Ghatkopar West and Mahavir Cashew and Foods Pvt Ltd in Ghatkopar East.
FDA officials inspected Cafe Mondegar on Saturday and found that required food storage temperatures were not being maintained.
Hot food was not kept above 60°C, while cold storage was not maintained below 5°C. Officials also flagged improper thawing and cooling procedures and sanitation deficiencies that could increase the risk of cross-contamination.
The four establishments were found to have violated Schedule 4 requirements under food safety and hygiene regulations.
The FDA also inspected 38 food businesses across Mumbai and took action against nine other establishments. A total of 47 samples, including milk, khoya and ghee, were collected for testing.
Outside Mumbai, authorities seized 30 litres of milk and over 4,000 kg of milk products and sweets worth more than Rs 15 lakh. The wider drive aims to curb food adulteration and hygiene violations ahead of the festive season.
