Nepal Flood Death Toll Rises To 1,451, Nearly 5,800 Still Missing

Kathmandu: The death toll from the devastating flash floods that struck Nepal on August 26 has risen to 1,451, while 5,786 people remain missing, according to the latest update from Nepal’s disaster management authority.

The disaster has triggered continued search, rescue and relief operations across affected districts.

The floods originated near the Nepal-Tibet border after a glacial collapse and sent a surge through the Bhotekoshi River, sweeping away homes, vehicles, roads and bridges and damaging hydropower infrastructure across northern and central Nepal.

Rasuwa and Nuwakot remain among the worst-affected areas.

Authorities said 13,784 people have been rescued, while 636 foreign nationals are among those still missing.

More than 20,000 security personnel have been involved in search and rescue operations, with helicopters continuing to reach affected areas.

Identifying victims remains a major challenge because many bodies were badly damaged or recovered in remote areas. Authorities have been collecting DNA samples from recovered remains and relatives of missing people to establish identities.

The disaster has also caused widespread damage to roads, bridges and hydropower projects, adding to the recovery challenges nearly a month after the floods. Search teams continue to work through debris and damaged infrastructure as families await information about missing relatives.
