OpenAI Plans To Merge Chat And Work Tabs In ChatGPT Desktop App

OpenAI is planning to simplify the ChatGPT desktop experience by bringing its Chat and Work sections together, allowing users to switch between conversations and task-based workflows within a single interface.

According to reports, the company has informed users about the proposed change through emails, adding that the feature will initially be made available to a limited group for feedback before a wider rollout.

The integration will also bring Chat and Work under a shared token allowance, meaning users will draw from the same usage pool across both sections. While OpenAI has said existing projects and ongoing work will remain unaffected, some users may encounter usage limits or need to wait for their allowance to reset more frequently, depending on their activity and the models they use.

The current desktop interface separates ChatGPT and Codex into different experiences, with multiple tabs and options that can make navigating projects and managing tasks more complicated.

Explaining the purpose of the change, OpenAI said the unified experience would allow users to move from developing an idea to completing a task without switching between separate sections.

Users will be able to access files and plugins, ask ChatGPT to create websites and presentations, and delegate online tasks while monitoring and guiding the process. However, Codex will continue to operate as a separate experience within the desktop application.

The planned integration follows a similar move by rival AI company Anthropic, which combined its Claude chat and Cowork functions into a single interface in September.

The move reflects an effort by AI companies to bring conversational assistance and task execution closer together, making their platforms more streamlined for everyday and professional use.
