PM Modi, Canada PM Carney Agree to Advance India-Canada Strategic Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney on Tuesday discussed strengthening bilateral ties, with both leaders agreeing to build on the recent positive momentum and pursue tangible progress in trade, energy, technology and security.

The telephone conversation took place ahead of Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand’s visit to India, which is scheduled to begin on Tuesday.

Sharing details of the discussion on X, Modi said the two leaders had agreed to work towards concrete outcomes across key areas of their strategic partnership, including trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people ties.

He also said India and Canada were working together towards a more stable and prosperous world.

The conversation came as both countries continued efforts to strengthen their economic engagement, with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal holding discussions with Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, on advancing negotiations for the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

Goyal said the discussions focused on achieving a balanced and mutually beneficial agreement that would improve market access and create fresh opportunities for trade and investment between the two countries.

He expressed confidence that the CEPA would provide new momentum to bilateral trade and reinforce economic cooperation.

Sidhu is leading a Canadian business delegation comprising around 300 participants, described as the country’s largest corporate delegation to visit India in three decades. The delegation is expected to explore opportunities for joint ventures across key sectors as negotiations on the trade agreement continue.

The diplomatic engagement and parallel trade discussions signal efforts by the two countries to translate the improving atmosphere in bilateral relations into concrete economic and strategic cooperation.
