Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday spoke with Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah and expressed condolences over the loss of lives in the devastating flash floods that have hit parts of Nepal.

During the conversation, Modi assured Shah that India is prepared to extend all possible humanitarian assistance and said the two countries are coordinating closely on rescue and relief operations.

“Spoke to Prime Minister Balendra Shah and conveyed condolences on the loss of lives due to the floods in Nepal,” Modi said in a post on X. He added that the people of India stand in solidarity with Nepal and that Indian teams are working with their Nepalese counterparts on relief efforts.

The Indian Embassy in Nepal also said it was coordinating with the Nepalese government to facilitate the rescue and relief of Indian nationals affected by the floods.

“The Embassy of India has remained engaged with the relevant authorities of Government of Nepal for early rescue and relief for Indian nationals affected by the flash floods,” it said in a post on X.

The Embassy has also issued emergency contact numbers for Indians seeking assistance.

The flash floods in the Bhote Koshi River area of Rasuwa have left hundreds of travellers unaccounted for. According to preliminary data from the Nepal Tourism Board, 384 travellers, including 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali citizens, have been reported missing.

Around 105 Indians are among the foreign nationals reported missing. Many of those affected were travelling towards the Kailash Mansarovar region, with several pilgrims reportedly losing contact near the Rasuwagadhi checkpoint.

The floods have damaged roads and critical infrastructure along the Nepal-China border and swept through nearby areas, prompting large-scale rescue operations by Nepalese security forces.
