PM Modi To Visit Canada On December 11-12

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Canada on December 11-12, the Indian High Commission in Ottawa announced Friday, signalling continued efforts by New Delhi and Ottawa to strengthen bilateral relations and advance economic cooperation.

The announcement follows a telephone conversation between Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney earlier this week, during which the two leaders agreed to build on the improving momentum in ties and pursue tangible progress across key areas of cooperation.

In a post on X, the Indian High Commission said the leaders had agreed to work towards concrete outcomes in trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people exchanges during their recent conversation.

Modi had described Tuesday’s interaction as warm and productive, underscoring the importance of strengthening the India-Canada strategic partnership.

The diplomatic engagement comes as Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand and International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu are in New Delhi for discussions aimed at advancing negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement. Both countries are seeking to conclude the pact by the end of this year.

According to a statement from the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office, Carney and Modi reaffirmed their commitment to concluding negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) at the earliest opportunity.

The proposed agreement is expected to support the two countries’ broader ambition of doubling bilateral trade by 2030.

The two leaders also discussed ways to build on what the Canadian statement described as renewed momentum in bilateral relations, welcoming increased engagement over the past year in areas including finance, defence and security, and artificial intelligence.

Modi’s forthcoming visit is expected to provide an opportunity for both sides to take stock of progress in these sectors and advance their shared economic and strategic priorities.

The renewed engagement marks an important phase in India-Canada relations, with trade negotiations and cooperation across emerging technologies and security issues featuring prominently in efforts to strengthen ties.
