PM Modi’s 25 Years In Public Service: From Gujarat CM To Three-Term Prime Minister

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has completed 25 years as the head of a government, marking a political journey that began on October 7, 2001, when he became Gujarat chief minister.

Over the years, his public career has moved from grassroots political organisation and state administration to leading the country since 2014.

Modi has described his journey as a commitment to improving people’s lives and serving the nation with greater dedication.

From Vadnagar To Gujarat’s Chief Minister

Born on September 17, 1950, in Vadnagar, Gujarat, Modi grew up in a modest family and, according to his official biography, helped at the family tea stall.

He joined the RSS in Ahmedabad in the early 1970s and later became active in the BJP organisation. His organisational responsibilities expanded through Gujarat and nationally before he was chosen to lead Gujarat in 2001.

He became Gujarat’s longest-serving chief minister, holding office from October 2001 until May 2014.

His first years in office followed the 2001 earthquake and earlier challenges including drought and a cyclone. Modi has recalled that his mother advised him to always work for the poor and never take a bribe.

From Gujarat To The Prime Minister’s Office

Modi led the BJP to a majority in the 2014 Lok Sabha election and returned with another majority in 2019. He became prime minister for a third consecutive term in 2024.

His tenure has included initiatives such as Jan Dhan, Aadhaar-linked welfare delivery, UPI, GST, infrastructure expansion, Make in India, Startup India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

The Union Cabinet has also highlighted housing, PM-KISAN, digital payments, healthcare and poverty reduction among its stated achievements.

A Focus On Technology, Security And Global Diplomacy

The government has highlighted Chandrayaan-3, Covid vaccine development, semiconductor and defence manufacturing, railway electrification and highways as milestones during Modi’s tenure.

On security, it has cited the 2016 surgical strikes, 2019 Balakot air strikes, Article 370 changes and Operation Sindoor.

Internationally, the government points to India’s G20 and BRICS role, advocacy for the Global South and Vaccine Maitri.

25 Years Of Leadership

To mark the milestone, the BJP has organised service activities, exhibitions, rallies, cultural programmes and public outreach under the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan.

The Union Cabinet’s October 2026 resolution described Modi’s 25-year journey as continuous leadership connecting his Gujarat administration with his national governance.

Modi has reiterated that his goal is to work harder towards the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
