Bihar: Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday expressed concern over the flood situation in Bihar and urged the government and administration to speed up relief, rescue, medical assistance and rehabilitation efforts.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi condoled the deaths caused by the floods and appealed to Congress workers to assist affected families.

He said essential aid should reach those affected without delay.

Congress president Kharge also expressed grief and said the priority should be to ensure relief reaches every affected family. He appealed to party workers to extend all possible help in the flood-hit areas.

Nearly 50 Lakh People Affected
According to the Disaster Management Department, 49.67 lakh people across 15 districts have been affected by the floods. The affected districts include Patna, Bhojpur, Saran, Vaishali, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Buxar, Samastipur, Munger, Katihar, Lakhisarai, Khagaria, Purnea, Madhepura and Araria.

Officials said heavy rain over the past few days, along with incessant rainfall in river catchment areas in Nepal, has caused several rivers and streams to rise above danger levels.

Bihar recorded 112.7 mm of rainfall in September so far, around six per cent above normal, according to the local weather office.
