External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, addressing the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, highlighted terrorism, regional conflicts, economic pressures and the challenges facing the Global South. He linked India’s security concerns with calls for peace, accountability, stability and development.
Strong Message on Terrorism
Without naming Pakistan, Jaishankar referred to a country he described as a persistent practitioner of terrorism, accusing it of trying to normalise cross-border terrorism and avoid accountability.

He said India would exercise its right to defend itself and stressed that terrorism cannot coexist with friendship and goodwill. He also called for action against financial networks supporting terrorism.
Commercial Shipping and Global Conflicts
On the Gulf conflict, Jaishankar said attacks on commercial ships and seafarers were unacceptable and called for restraint, civilian protection and uninterrupted movement of energy and food supplies.

He backed efforts to end the war in Ukraine and reiterated India’s support for a two-state solution in West Asia, alongside humanitarian assistance for Palestinians.
Global South Faces ‘4F Crisis’
Jaishankar warned of a “4F crisis”- food, fuel, fertiliser and finance aggravated by climate conditions, fertiliser shortages and barriers to grain movement.
He also criticised the “weaponisation” of markets, technology, finance, resources and connectivity, saying such practices were undermining trust and the Global South’s industrialisation.
India’s Development and Global Role
He highlighted India’s progress in healthcare, education, water, electricity, roads, housing and digital infrastructure, while saying India has undertaken 600 major development projects across 78 countries.
Jaishankar also stressed that peace requires stability, security and predictability, arguing that the absence of war alone does not constitute lasting peace.
