S Jaishankar Meets Marco Rubio; Raises India’s Concerns Over Russia Sanctions Act

New York: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he raised India’s “interests and concerns” regarding the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, or SRIA.

Jaishankar said the two also discussed the situation in the Gulf and the ongoing war in Ukraine during their meeting.

“Good to meet @SecRubio of the US during #UNHighLevelWeek. Reiterated India’s interests and concerns with regard to SRIA. Also discussed the Gulf and Ukraine situations,” Jaishankar said in a post on X.

The meeting comes as India closely watches developments surrounding the US sanctions framework targeting Russia. New Delhi remains a major buyer of Russian crude, making any measures affecting countries that continue energy trade with Moscow a significant issue for India.

Rubio also confirmed the meeting, highlighting the broader strategic engagement between Washington and New Delhi.

“Great to meet with Indian External Affairs Minister @DrSJaishankar in New York today. Together, we are building on the U.S.-India strategic partnership and coordinating on key regional priorities and upcoming multilateral efforts,” Rubio said on X.

The Jaishankar-Rubio talks come amid continuing discussions between India and the US on trade, energy security and wider geopolitical issues, alongside the two countries’ efforts to strengthen their strategic partnership.

The ministers met during the high-level week of the UN General Assembly, where the Ukraine conflict, tensions in the Gulf and other major international developments remain key areas of discussion.
