US President Donald Trump has announced a semiconductor investment deal worth up to 21 billion dollars, with Japan providing the funding for two new chip manufacturing facilities in Malta, New York. GlobalFoundries will operate the facilities under a US-Japan initiative.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the project is expected to generate 27,000 construction and supply-chain jobs, along with more than 1,000 skilled manufacturing positions.

Separately, the US Department of Commerce has agreed to reallocate up to 955 million dollars from GlobalFoundries’ existing CHIPS Act award to support investments in silicon photonics, silicon-germanium technology and advanced packaging. The funding will support expansion at facilities in New York and Vermont.
Trump described the announcement as part of his administration’s efforts to strengthen domestic semiconductor manufacturing, create jobs and improve economic security.
The agreement marks a major US-Japan partnership aimed at expanding American chip production and strengthening semiconductor supply chains.
