France Imposes Curfews After Weekend Violence
France introduced targeted restrictions on public gatherings in Paris, Lille, Nice and other cities. Paris police prohibited demonstrations in certain areas from 8 pm on Monday and imposed a curfew around Place de la République and Les Halles from 11 pm until 6 am on Tuesday.
Additional police personnel were deployed to enforce the measures.
According to the Interior Ministry, around 2,400 people were arrested and nearly 1,000 officers were injured. One protester died after suffering a cardiac arrest on Saturday.
The Federation of Trade and Retail said nearly 3,000 shops were affected by the violence.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said targeted restrictions were appropriate, while leaving open the possibility of a state of emergency.
Macron Condemns Destruction
Macron condemned the violence in a televised address, saying nothing justified the destruction.
He acknowledged that peaceful protesters could have legitimate grievances but stressed that their concerns should be distinguished from acts of violence.
He also said local authorities would be empowered to ban demonstrations when necessary to protect public buildings and businesses.
