Washington: Two members of Iran’s delegation to the UN General Assembly in New York were removed from the United States on Saturday after allegedly failing to comply with an order to leave the country, according to a US official cited by Axios.
The official said the diplomats had remained in New York several days after the US State Department directed Iran’s UN mission on Monday to ensure that its entire delegation departed the country immediately.
On Friday, the Iranian mission was informed that US authorities were aware the two diplomats were still in New York and were again instructed to leave without delay.
According to the official, one diplomat departed on Friday night, while the second left on Saturday morning.
The US official said the action reflected Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s position on enforcing the departure order.
The development comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran as diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the ongoing conflict face difficulties and concerns grow over a possible resumption of hostilities.
The removal of the two diplomats is the latest development in the strained relationship between the United States and Iran, with both sides facing continued diplomatic challenges amid efforts to address the broader conflict.
