Two people have died following a violent incident at a school in Gosen-Neu Zittau, near Berlin. The victims include an 18-year-old secondary school student and a 30-year-old man who reportedly died while attempting to intervene.
Police have arrested a male suspect in connection with the incident. Brandenburg police said on social media that the man was detained following an act of violence, while officers continued securing the crime scene.
The suspect is 19 years old and is believed to be the former boyfriend of the 18-year-old victim. Authorities have not confirmed whether he was a student at the private Docemus school.
The school’s managing director, Michael Kunz, said classes will be cancelled on Friday as the investigation continues. He said the school would nevertheless remain open for students who want to come in.
According to sources quoted by reports Kunz said, “Due to the ongoing investigation, we cannot and will not provide any information regarding the specific circumstances and sequence of events at this time,”
He added, “We want to provide them with a safe space where they can come together, talk to each other, and process what has happened,”
A decision on how regular school life will continue will be taken carefully in the coming days.
