Mumbai: Mumbai Police detained two men after a security scare at the venue of an event to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recovering a firearm from one of them and a purported fake Prime Minister’s Office identity card from the other, officials said.
The incident was reported at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex, where security arrangements were in place ahead of Modi’s scheduled event.
According to police, security personnel noticed a man moving suspiciously near the venue and stopped him for questioning. His private bodyguard was also detained after police allegedly found him carrying a gun.
Police identified the man as 24-year-old Rohan Parekh and said he was carrying an identity card that purported to be issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.
The incident came to light during heightened pre-event security checks involving local police and central security personnel. The men were reportedly intercepted near a restricted access point, where the identity card raised suspicion and prompted further verification.
The Mumbai Crime Branch has taken over the investigation, officials said.
Investigators are questioning both men to establish why they were at the venue, how the firearm was brought inside the security perimeter and whether the purported PMO credentials were used to gain access to restricted areas.
Their mobile phones, identity documents and other belongings are also being examined as part of the investigation.
Police have not disclosed a specific motive and said further legal action will follow after the allegations and circumstances surrounding the incident are verified.
