US Suspends Microsoft, Infosys, Tata, Wipro, HCL Over H-1B, Green Card Sponsorship

Washington DC: The U.S. Department of Labor has suspended several major technology and IT outsourcing companies, including Cognizant, Infosys, Tata, Wipro, HCL, Capgemini, Microsoft and Adobe, from the government’s Permanent Labor Certification Program, or PERM.

The PERM program is a key step in the process of obtaining employment-based green cards for foreign workers, including many H-1B visa holders.

Vice President JD Vance announced the action at a White House news conference, alleging that Microsoft had replaced laid-off American workers with foreign employees.

“If you do the math, for every worker that Microsoft laid off, they replaced that worker with one and a half foreign indentured servants,” Vance said.

U.S. Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling said several major IT companies, including Cognizant, Infosys, Tata, Wipro, HCL, Capgemini and Adobe, would also be suspended from the program. Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The administration also announced investigations into nine universities, including Harvard, Yale and Stanford, over allegations involving international students and American wages.

The H-1B program allows U.S. companies to hire foreign workers for specialized occupations. Nearly three-quarters of H-1B approvals go to Indian workers, making the latest action particularly significant for Indian technology professionals working in the United States.

The move comes as the Trump administration intensifies scrutiny of the H-1B visa system and foreign-worker hiring practices, with the White House pushing for greater emphasis on protecting American jobs and wages.
