Vatican Releases First Images Of Pope Leo XIV After Lung Cancer Surgery

The Vatican has released the first photographs of Pope Leo XIV since his lung cancer surgery, showing him celebrating Mass at Gemelli Hospital as doctors report continued progress in his recovery.

The 71-year-old pontiff led the service in a chapel established inside the hospital, distributed Communion to medical staff and Vatican security personnel, and delivered a homily.

He also expressed gratitude to hospital workers for caring for patients and supporting him during his treatment.

A medical report stated that Leo’s recovery has progressed enough for him to manage his regular daily activities independently.

He underwent surgery on October 13 to remove the lower portion of his right lung after doctors detected a suspicious nodule. The procedure confirmed adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said the Pope is expected to make his first public appearance on Sunday to deliver the traditional midday prayer, depending on his recovery.

Meanwhile, the Vatican has released the list of journalists scheduled to accompany Leo on his November 6–17 visit to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. However, doctors are awaiting further test results to determine the cancer’s characteristics, whether it has spread and if additional treatment is required.
