Verified: 2011 India-Pakistan Naval Incident Video Falsely Linked to Recent Collision

On September 15, a Pakistani Navy ship collided with an Indian Navy warship in the Arabian Sea. The Indian vessel was reportedly on a routine mission when the Pakistani naval ship approached it at high speed.

Following the incident, India’s Ministry of External Affairs summoned the Chargé d’Affaires of the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi and lodged a protest, describing the Pakistani naval vessel’s conduct as “unacceptable and unprofessional.”

Against this backdrop, a video showing Indian and Pakistani naval vessels coming dangerously close to each other is being widely shared on social media with the claim that it shows the recent collision in the Arabian Sea.

A Facebook user posted the viral post with the following caption:

A Pakistani Navy vessel collided with an Indian Navy frontline warship in the North Arabian Sea on the evening of September 15, after reportedly approaching at high speed and manoeuvring in what Indian sources described as an “unsafe and unprofessional” manner.
The Indian warship was on a routine surveillance mission in international waters. India has since summoned Pakistan’s Chargé d’Affaires and lodged a strong protest, calling the conduct “unacceptable and unprofessional.” The Indian Navy vessel reportedly suffered no major damage and continued its mission.
India also said the conduct was in contravention of Article 10 of the 1991 India–Pakistan agreement concerning advance notice of military exercises, manoeuvres and troop movements.
The incident comes amid heightened maritime tensions in the Arabian Sea and highlights the importance of maintaining safe navigation and agreed protocols between the two militaries.

NewsMobile investigated the viral post and found the claims to be false.

To verify the claim, we conducted a reverse image search using keyframes from the viral video. The search led us to the same footage uploaded to YouTube on October 16, 2014, confirming that the clip had been available online for more than a decade before the recent incident.

According to the video’s description, it showed the Pakistan Navy’s PNS Babur colliding with an Indian naval vessel.

A further keyword search led us to an NDTV report from 2011, which carried footage of the same incident from another angle. The report identified the Indian warship involved as INS Godavari.

We also found a press release issued by India’s Ministry of External Affairs on June 18, 2011, confirming the incident. According to the statement, India had formally protested Pakistan’s conduct, stating that PNS Babur’s “risky manoeuvres” had jeopardised the safety of INS Godavari and its crew. The ministry said the manoeuvres violated international maritime safety regulations as well as the 1991 India-Pakistan agreement concerning advance notice of military exercises.

Therefore, we can conclusively say that the viral post, claiming to show Indian and Pakistani naval vessels coming dangerously close to each other in the Arabian Sea, is false.
