Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he will meet US President Donald Trump in New York during the United Nations General Assembly as diplomatic efforts to revive negotiations over the Ukraine war continue.
The two leaders discussed the meeting during a phone call on Sunday, with Zelenskyy saying it “could achieve a lot” and that diplomatic momentum was building.
Zelenskyy recently met US negotiator Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Kyiv during their first visit to Ukraine as part of US mediation efforts.
Washington has been seeking to restart direct negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow, with discussions reportedly focused on possible de-escalation steps and security concerns. Russia has indicated that talks could resume in October.
Zelenskyy said the discussions include energy and food security, as well as measures aimed at protecting civilians.
He has also urged the US to provide additional air-defence systems to help Ukraine respond to Russian missile attacks.
The negotiations previously reached an impasse and were later disrupted by the wider regional conflict involving Iran.
US-mediated efforts are now being renewed, while Moscow and Kyiv continue to differ over conditions for ending the fighting. Ukraine is also seeking the return of territory currently held by Russian forces.
Zelenskyy did not announce a specific date for his meeting with Trump in New York.
