Delhi AQI Drops Sharply To 66, But Relief May Be Short-Lived

New Delhi: Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) has shown a notable improvement, falling from a concerning level of 280 to as low as 66 during the afternoon of October 15, 2026. The improvement was primarily attributed to favourable weather conditions, including rain and strong winds. However, the temporary relief may soon fade as the weather is expected to turn drier.

According to data from AQI.in, air quality readings between 10:01 am on October 15 and 10:01 am on October 16 showed fluctuating pollution levels. The city recorded its best air quality at around 2 pm on October 15, but the improvement was short-lived. The AQI subsequently began rising again, reaching 177 during the night between October 15 and 16.

As of 10:01 am on October 16, the AQI had climbed to 158, placing it back in the “Poor” category. These fluctuations highlight the challenges Delhi faces in maintaining air quality, particularly as weather conditions change.

Weather Forecast And Its Impact On Pollution

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that weather conditions in Delhi are unlikely to provide further relief from pollution in the immediate future. In its bulletin released on October 16, the IMD indicated that no rain is expected in the city until at least October 22.

Clear skies are expected from October 18 onwards, with maximum temperatures potentially rising to between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius by October 21 and 22.

While rain and strong winds help disperse pollutants, the absence of these conditions in the coming days may lead to an accumulation of emissions from various sources. Vehicular emissions, road dust and construction activities are among the significant contributors to the city’s air pollution.

Another major concern is stubble burning in neighbouring states, which typically increases during the paddy harvest season. Smoke and fine particulate matter from these fires can travel towards Delhi-NCR, worsening air quality. The extent of their impact depends on factors such as wind direction and speed.

Challenges Ahead For Delhi’s Air Quality

As Delhi approaches the winter months, air quality conditions are expected to become more challenging. Cooler air and reduced wind speeds can restrict the dispersion of pollutants, allowing them to accumulate closer to the ground. This can further deteriorate air quality and push the AQI into worse categories.

Alongside meteorological factors, continued emissions from vehicles, industrial activities and construction dust will remain significant challenges. The city’s newly implemented anti-pollution regulations will be tested as these sources continue to contribute to persistent air quality problems.

With no rain forecast for the upcoming week, the temporary improvement following the recent showers may not last. Delhi residents may need to prepare for a return to more hazardous air quality levels as the city faces these challenging environmental conditions.
