Man Uses Claude To Develop Rare Disease Treatment, Anthropic Buys His Startup

Anthropic has acquired Mithril Medicine, a one-person biotechnology startup founded by Cody Tranbarger, who used the company’s Claude AI models to support research into treatments for rare muscle diseases.

Tranbarger announced the acquisition on X on Tuesday, revealing that the deal had closed in July.

Founded around 18 months ago, Mithril focused on LAMA2-related congenital muscular dystrophy, an inherited condition that causes muscle weakness.

Claude helped Tranbarger manage experiments, data, contracts and logistics across 11 external laboratories, alongside paid consultants. Anthropic described the approach as “Pipeline-in-a-Person”.

Mithril reported promising results in mice for its LAMA2 programme in under 18 months. Seven mice receiving an antibody treatment showed roughly twice the grip strength and peak triceps force of four control mice.

However, testing was not randomised, experiments took place at different times, and the findings have not yet undergone peer review.

Tranbarger has joined Anthropic to continue the work and lead broader drug-development efforts.

The company said a candidate could enter human clinical trials as early as late 2028, provided further results remain encouraging. No drugs from the programme have been tested in humans so far.

The acquisition forms part of Anthropic’s wider life-sciences strategy, which includes collaborations with BigHat Biosciences, Bristol Myers Squibb, Divergence Labs, Enveda, Generate Biomedicines and The Column Group.

Its work spans molecule design, drug optimisation, regulatory documentation and clinical-trial planning.
