Kolkata: Several parts of West Bengal are likely to experience heavy rainfall between September 22 and 25 due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department said on Sunday.
The weather system is expected to strengthen into a deep depression while moving towards the southern Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh coast. It may also trigger strong winds and rough sea conditions. The IMD has advised fishermen to stay away from the sea on September 21 and 22.
In West Bengal, coastal districts, particularly Purba Medinipur and South 24 Parganas, are likely to receive heavier rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour.
Other districts of south Bengal, including Kolkata, may experience thunderstorms, lightning and winds reaching 30 to 40 kilometres per hour at isolated locations until September 25.
Meanwhile, the sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar are expected to receive heavy rainfall from September 23 to 25.
The IMD has also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds in Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur and Malda during the same period.
